CLRC Daresbury Laboratory

Head of the Structural Biology Laboratory

The Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Council, CCLRC, is
one of Europe's largest multidisciplinary research organisations supporting
scientists and engineers world-wide.

This vacancy is for a Protein Crystallographer to drive the in-house protein
crystallography research programmes working at the forefront of synchrotron
radiation. The person appointed will be of high scientific calibre and
applications from both the UK and overseas are welcomed.

The Synchrotron Radiation Source at Daresbury Laboratory is a key facility
used for structural biology. CCLRC wishes to expand its research programme
in the increasingly important area of protein crystallography at the SRS in
the run-up to the new UK synchrotron source. Daresbury Laboratory has
excellent research facilities both on its protein crystallography beamlines
and in support provided by the Structural Biology Laboratory. This offers
great potential for a technically demanding research programme in
macromolecular crystallography and the opportunity for the development of
novel synchrotron radiation techniques in structural biology. It is expected
that the successful candidate, as part of the CCLRC team, will also play a
key role in contributing to the design of protein crystallography facilities
at the new synchrotron radiation source, Diamond, to be constructed at
Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxfordshire. Diamond is a joint venture
between the UK and French Governments and the Wellcome Trust.

This is purely a research post and there will be no significant
administrative duties other than those related to the in-house research
programme in protein crystallography. The package includes: an opportunity
to appoint a scientist for a 3 year fixed-term in support of the research, a
generous capital/consumables/additional salaries budget and access to beam
time via the Laboratory's Rolling Programme Mode Time.

For more information contact Dr Gareth Jones on Tel. 44 (0) 1925 603 539 or
email g.r.jones@dl.ac.uk.

The post is permanent and the salary range will be between 30,400 and 51,810
(UKP). More could be available for an exceptional candidate. A
non-contributory pension scheme, flexible working hours and a generous leave
allowance are offered.

Application forms can be obtained from: Recruitment Office, Personnel
Division, Daresbury Laboratory, Daresbury, Warrington, Cheshire, WA4 4AD.
Telephone (01925) 603469 quoting reference VN1748D. More information about
CLRC is available from CCLRC's World Wide Web pages at
http://www.cclrc.ac.uk

All applications must be returned by 13 June 2001.

The CCLRC is committed to Equal Opportunities and to achieving the Investors
In People standard. A no smoking policy is in operation.
