Other free products worth looking at include:
[1] Star Office 5.1
Portable: runs on Linux, Solaris, OS/2, Windows. Excellent MS Office
compatibility, can even use some MS-Office templates and macros.
[2] KDE KOffice
Currently available with a developers release 1.89, but should appear
in the next few months with KDE 2. Less emphasis on compatibility.
Word processor combines DTP function.
[3] Gnome workshop/Gnome office
Abiword and Gnumeric are both usable and provide good MS
compatibility, integration into a full package is still under way.
[4] LyX
For scientific publishing for the non TeX-savvy, LyX is a superb GUI
to LaTeX.
[5] More info
w3.org also has a good page giving details on word processor filters
for Unix.
Star office in particular is drawing good reviews as an Office
replacement. It was originally developed by Star Division in Germany,
but was recently bought up by Sun and released for free as a stick to
smack Microsoft with.
