If you are primarily interested in getting the best number-crunching CPU
performance you should not overlook the Compaq 'Alpha' chips. Intel & AMD
architecture clock rates have zoomed over the last few years, but they
still lag badly on floating point performance.  You can run Linux on Alpha
if you choose; I am not sure which applications are supported on that
platform.
