You might consider checking the memory limits that are set for your
machine. I don't know about current Alphas, but many used to be sent out
with really low limits which limited usability (because they were set well
below the physical resources of the machine...).

Check out the Mosflm help pages which describe a problem (and cure!) with
similar symptoms;
