  *****************************************
  re Phase Out of BNL FTP Archive
       as of March 1, 2002
     and mirroring the PDB ftp archive
       from ftp.ebi.ac.uk
  *****************************************

The EBI will continue to mirror the PDB FTP archive
in the RCSB directory structure.

  NO DIRECTORIES IN THE PDB FTP BNL ARCHIVE WILL BE KEPT AT THE EBI
  AFTER THIS DATE, ONLY A LOCAL COPY OF THE UNCOMPRESSED FILES WILL BE
  MAINTAINED

You can mirror the pdb from ftp.ebi.ac.uk using
  ftp://sunsite.org.uk/packages/mirror

with the "packages/ftp.ebi.ac.uk" file as below:

package=defaults
        hostname=YOUR_MACHINE_NAME
        dir_mode=0755
        file_mode=0755
        user=YOUR_USER_NAME
        group=YOUR_GROUP_NAME
        update_log=.mirror
        compress_patt=
        compress_prog=
        do_deletes=true
        max_delete_files=5%
        max_delete_dirs=5%
        make_bad_symlinks=true
        chmod=true
        force_times=yes
        algorithm=0
        mode_copy=true
package=pdb
        site=ftp.ebi.ac.uk
        remote_user=ftp
        remote_password=YOUR_EMAIL_ADDRESS
        recursive=true
        update_log=.mirror
        remote_dir=/pub/databases/rcsb/pdb
        local_dir=YOUR_LOCAL_DIRECTORY

#----------------------------------------------------------------

 Note: The weekly updates are made available by the RCSB each
       Weds at 8-00am UK time - the EBI copy will be complete by 9-00am UK
       time onto ftp1.ebi.ac.uk and by 10-00am UK time on ftp.ebi.ac.uk.

 Note: The RCSB ftp archive does not contain uncompressed entries.
       The EBI will keep in the ftp area (mainly for internal use) an
       uncompressed copy in
       ftp://ftp.ebi.ac.uk/pub/databases/msd/pdb_uncompressed/
       You can also mirror this directory if you choose.
       (Until 1-March-2002 it is simply a symbolic link)

 Note: If you were using the BNL archive directory
       ftp.ebi.ac.uk/pub/databases/pdb/pub/pdb/latest_update
       to do weekly updates on derived in-house data/services/copying
       You will now have to use the information contained in directory
       ftp://ftp.ebi.ac.uk/pub/databases/rcsb/pdb/data/status
       This contains a sub-directory for each weekly update.
       For example the latest is
       ftp://ftp.ebi.ac.uk/pub/databases/rcsb/pdb/data/status/20020128
       containing the set of files:
        added.nmr
        added.pdb
        added.sf
        curated.nmr
        curated.pdb
        curated.sf
        modified.nmr
        modified.pdb
        modified.sf
        obsolete.nmr
        obsolete.pdb
        obsolete.sf

        Each file contains the file names of entries in each category.
        The entry names are list as for example

status/20020128> less added.pdb
-rw-r--r--   1 rcsb     rcsb      578583 Jan 30  2002 pdb1ez9.ent
-rw-r--r--   1 rcsb     rcsb      209223 Jan 25 00:00 pdb1hzm.ent
-rw-r--r--   1 rcsb     rcsb      433917 Jan 25 00:00 pdb1jke.ent
-rw-r--r--   1 rcsb     rcsb      934659 Jan 30  2002 pdb1jkj.ent
-rw-r--r--   1 rcsb     rcsb      895617 Jan 30  2002 pdb1jll.ent
    ....

PLEASE NOTE: The current use of the ftp.ebi.ac.uk PDB archives
are for
    the BNL directory structure Jan 2002: 313494 requests
    the RCSB directory structure Jan 2002: 11386 requests

A large number of users will need to change their scripts!!!
