Hi:

Oils can be used as 'plugs' when crystals are in the capillary.
This is similar as leaving a little mother liquor in the capillary, before
sealing it. These oil plugs surrounding the crystal will prevent moisture
and also minimize crystal dehydration rate. The reference can be picked up
from an article in Journal of Applied crystallography.
