Since HTML has the text and the Markup (the tags) in the same file, you have to be very careful with letters (characters) which might mean something special for HTML. The pointy brackets around the tags are obvious; you can not use those easily in a text. But there are others, e.g. the double quotes around attribute values. If you are very unlucky and have special characters in the 'wrong' place, your text does not come out the way you want it. You should therefore use a special way of describing those characters, through a special numbering system. See my special characters table for the way to do this, and a list of possible characters.
