The York Structural Biology Laboratory (YSBL) uses and develops methods to determine, analyse and exploit the structure of proteins and their complexes with other molecules. The research contributes powerful insights into biological function and finds application in drug discovery and exploitation of enzymes as biocatalysts. YSBL and many of its senior staff have leading international reputations in areas of structural biology, structural enzymology, crystallographic methods, synchrotron science and molecular modelling and have won many international prizes in these areas. This research generates a considerable number of publications in high-impact journals. Indeed, 7 of the University's top 10 most-cited publications are from YSBL research. Since 1990, YSBL has generated over £30M in research project funding maintaining a large and dynamic research group currently containing around 80 scientists. This is set to grow further, with new appointments and the arrivals of research fellows building up research activity. YSBL has also played a leading role in JIF and SRIF initiatives and the development of biomolecular science across the York campus.
