Best phase

The 'Best phase' is the single phase which represents the centroid of a phase probability distribution. It is the phase which, when used with a Figure of merit to downweight the structure factor magnitude, gives rise to the electron density map with the minimum level of noise.

When the phase probability distribution is unimodal and symmetric, the best phase is the same as the Most probable phase.

φbest = arg( ∫ P(φ) exp(i φ) dφ )
