Figure of merit

'Figure of Merit' is a term used in a number of contexts in X-ray crystallography, however the most common use is to describe the weight which, when used to downweight the structure factor magnitude and in conjunction with the Best phase gives rise to the electron density map with the minimum level of noise.

The figure of merit is usually referred to by the symbol W or the acronym FOM. It can be calculated by
