Yes, we've been using it for years (petrolatum is Vaseline for the
non-initiates).  We used the same trick of melting it in a hot water bath
and sucking it up in a syringe.  We would also cut it with a little mineral
oil to further reduce the viscosity (wait until the vaseline is melted
before trying to mix in the mineral oil).  There's the added benefit of
seeing the clerk's face in the drugstore as he/she tries to figure out why
this pervert is buying 3 pounds of vaseline and a quart of mineral oil...

Having said that, greasing plates is STILL a pain in the neck, and we use
Q-plates and sealing tape almost exclusively now.
