I have used up2date and am now at gcc-g77-2.96-69, which i believe is the
latest distributed by RedHat. while I have the reported REFMAC5 problem,
Garib's test program ran OK for me no matter whether it was compiled with
-O0 or -O2.  This probably means that my current optimisation problem is
different from one corrected by a Red Hat bug fix update in december:
