JOHN INNES CENTRE

TWO POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH SCIENTISTS

Applications are invited for two Postdoctoral Research Scientists within the
Department of Biological Chemistry at the John Innes Centre.

Post 1:	X-ray crystallography (3 years)
Post 2:	Molecular biology/biochemistry (3 Years)

Post 1 is a three-year JIC-funded post to carry out a project on the x-ray
crystallography of DNA gyrase. This position forms a vital element of the
research programme of the lab, complementing and underpinning work on
mechanism and drug interaction. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in
biochemistry or related discipline together with a knowledge of biochemistry
and x-ray crystallography methods, including: protein purification,
bacteriological methods, cloning, protein engineering and protein
crystallography. Please quote post reference number 41 09 20 in all
correspondence.

Post 2 is a three-year BBSRC-funded post to carry out a project on the
characterisation of the mode of action of the bacterial toxin Microcin B17,
a novel inhibitor of DNA gyrase. The postholder will determine the
molecular basis of the action of microcin on gyrase and, in doing so, reveal
new features of the gyrase mechanism and explore new possibilities in drug
design. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in biochemistry, molecular biology or
a related discipline. The work will involve determination of the site and
mode of action of the inhibitor and is aimed at the development of novel
anti-bacterial agents. Please quote post reference number 09 80 in all
correspondence.

Salary on appointment for both positions will be within the range £19,500 to
£23,000 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. Staff have the
opportunity to join a non-contributory superannuation scheme. Informal
enquiries can be made to Prof. A. Maxwell (Tel: +44 1603 450771; email
tony.maxwell@bbsrc.ac.uk; www.jic.bbsrc.ac.uk)

For an application form and further particulars write to the Personnel
Officer, John Innes Centre, Norwich Research Park, Colney, Norwich, Norfolk,
