Just before the error message I would expect you to see some output
giving you the current values of MAXPTS and NPTS. What you should see is
that the latter is greater than the former.

To get around the problem you need to edit the source code
(in $CPROG/getax.f) and change all lines of the form

      parameter (maxpts=20000)

so that maxpts is equal to or greater than the reported value of NPTS.
You will then need to recompile the program, and put it on your path -
see the relevant section of the "patches" page accessed via the CCP4
problems pages (or go directly to 
http://www.dl.ac.uk/CCP/CCP4/patches.html#1_3)
