[ccp4bb]: Hole in a needle-like crystal

Dear All,

This is not exactly a CCP4-related topic but I think that someone can
answer my question.

One of my colleagues is working on three-dimnesional crystals of GFP.
(He is not a crystallographer.) In the polarized microscope, the
needle-like crystals show clear hole-like structure (dark core) in
the parallel direction to the longer axis. Have someone experienced
a similar crystal? If so, what is the explanation of the hole?
(Actual hole or nucleation part or others?) Any suggestions are
welcome.

Thanking you in advance,
Kaoru Mitsuoka
