We once had the same problem and we managed to get clear drop without any skin 
formation by lowering the temperature of the crystallisation and including some 
glycerol in the crystallisation mixture (some 5-10%). 

By the way, crystals grown on the surface of the drop were highly mosaic but 
after optimisation (lower temperature-glycerol) the mosaicity dropped 
significantly (see JMB, (1995) 246, 374-381).
