Ethan answered the question quite well, in that this is a kernel issue
(although the newer versions of Linux will come with the later kernels,
and so upgrading the whole system will usually help). But a kernel (2.4.7)
was suggested in a separate letter which is not suposedly unsuitable, so
I think some clarification is in order. If one has the 2.4.6 kernel
(check to to see what Mandrake 7.2 has) then you are basically set. From
2.4.7 until 2.4.11, Firewire support in Linux was somewhat broken, and use
of these kernels for firewire is contraindicated (see
http://linux1394.sourceforge.net/ ). The latest kernels (2.4.18 as
suggested by Ethan, and 2.4.19) are supposed to work. We use 2.4.6 on our
laptop for synchrotron trips, and that is fine.
I'm not sure if the disks can be hot-plugged, even in the latest kernels,
  however...
