Sorry you're having problems ... one possibility is that although the
default.def file exists and has read permission for all users, maybe
part of the path doesn't. (This is unlikely though if other programs can
still run; I would expect it to affect them all.) 

Beyond this I'm a little confused about the precise situation that you
describe in your message. I'm guessing that the suite was originally
installed by root, and your evil user has then tried to rebuild amore in
a different area - but is it this version that gives the error below
(though you say that the build failed) or the original version made by
root? 

If you can clarify the situation further then hopefully I'll be able to
supply a better answer for you.
