ORGANIZERS
P.R. Evans (Cambridge - England)
M. Rizzi (Novara and Pavia - Italy)

PURPOSE AND ORGANIZATION OF THE WORKSHOP
The workshop will be open to about 200 participants and will focus on
the application of X-ray crystallographic methods to the study of
proteins and nucleic acids, with emphasis on the latest developments.
The program will include lectures on: crystallization, data collection
and processing, synchrotron sources, phasing (MIR, MAD, direct methods
and molecular replacement), map modification and interpretation, and new
structures. It is expected that most of the contributions will come from
participants who are encouraged to propose a title for a poster or oral
contribution in their application letter.

LECTURES WILL INCLUDE
C. Branden (Stockholm), G. Bricogne (Cambridge), M.A. Carrondo (Lisbon),
E. Dodson (York), A. Jones (Uppsala), G. Kleywegt (Uppsala), V. Lamzin
(Hamburg), A. Perrakis (Grenoble), S. MacSweeney (Grenoble),A. Mattevi
(Pavia),
T.Schneider (Goettingen), I. Uson (Goettingen)

LOCATION
The workshop will be held at the Centro di Cultura Scientifica "A.
Volta", Villa Olmo, lake Como, Italy. Villa Olmo is located near the
Swiss-Italian border, at 20 minutes walking distance from the centre of
Como. Como can be reached comfortably by train (30-40 min. from Milano;
3-4 hours from Zurich and Basel) or by car via the A9-E36 motorway

GENERAL INFORMATION
The meeting will last from Sunday, May 16th, 1999, 3 p.m. to
Thursady,May 20th,
12 a.m. Participants should therefore arrive on Saturday evening or
Sunday
morning. As it is a major goal of the organizers to provide an
opportunity to
young crystallographers to attende the workshop, much freedom is given
to the participants in what they want to spend on board. The cheapest
accomodation is sharing a double room with shower, for about US $
50.-per night per person.
A fee of 300,000 lire will be required for conference material, hot
lunches and beverages during the breaks. Those who need financial
support in order to be able
to participate, should indicate so in their application, and include a
confirmation
letter from their group leader or head of department. We hope to be able
to provide partial support for some participants, but this will depend
on the level of sponsorship which will not be known until near the
meeting date. Please address any request for additional information to
either one of the organizers.

APPLICATION
Application, including a short c.v., proposed title for scientific
contributions (either oral or poster communications), and any additional
relevant information should be sent before January 30th, 1999 to:
Dr M. Rizzi
Dept. Genetics and Microbiology
University of Pavia
27100 Pavia (Italy)

Further information on accomodation and travel connections to Como, will
be provided to the successful applicants together with the acceptance
letter.
