You should not need automake (or autoconf) unless you're a developer,
and if this is stuff I did, it depends on pre-release versions anyhow.

That sort of message probably indicates that the timestamps on some
files which you unpacked from the distribution are wrong so that they
look out-of-date with respect to the ones from which they are built.
If necessary, you can look in Makefile.in to see what gets regenerated
by automake and run `touch' on the relevant files in the distribution.
