Hi Derek,

in Mac OS X you have the possibility to format your drive in different ways:

regular HFS - as used by Apple for the classic Mac OS
HFS + - same like HFS but with some additional features e.g. it's possible to
adress more than 65536 Blocks per Partition
UFS (Unix File System) , which is basically UNIX. You can't see this type of
format directly on your regular Mac OS 9.2 it's a pure UNIX partition then, but
of course you can see the HD from OS X. I think it's even possible to mount
such volumes under OS 9.2 and earlier as a kind of Network Volume - but I'm not
sure about this.

Make sure to buy a HD with the newest FW Chip, this will allow you up to 50
MB/s transferrate, and also make sure to have a drive with no additional Power
supply, then you can be sure it's "Hot swappable" - at least on a Mac.

If you're considering to buy an IBook or TiPb, be patient and wait another 2
week, there'll surely be a TiPb Rev.2 soon and there also might be an early
revision of the new IBook (although it's only 6 month on the market).

Just check out the usual Mac News sites.

Have fun

Juergen
