Hi, 
For the past couple of years, we've used Maxtor firewire drives 'in-house'
and reccomended them to users.  Overall, they have been pretty reliable, and
rarely failed.  Personally, I've used (and badly abused!) about 4 drives
over the past eighteen months and had no problems.

In saying that, we typically only format them for use on a PC or Mac.  I've
heard that under linux problems are more common, especially if you make the
mistake of pulling the plug before dismounting the drive.

Anyway, from our experience, I'd say you've been unlucky and bought a bad
batch.
