Here is Dr. Christodolou's reaction again, in a format more
convenient for members not on a Macintosh.

If we want to start a conflict between Mac and PC users, attach 
pictures as PICT and .bmp, respectively. Pictures can greatly 
enhance the message of an email, provided its not more trouble
to convert to a viewable format than the picture is worth. 
Since nearly everyone has a browser on their mail computer, 
lets send attachments in formats that can be read by all browsers: 
...gif if line art or less than 256 colors; JPEG for high color. 
95% of users (randomly generated statistic) will then see the 
image inline at the bottom of the message, with no effort required.
